On July 22, 2026, I passed the Google Ads Search Certification. The credential is publicly verifiable and valid until July 22, 2027. For me, however, the more important question is not whether a specialist can pass a test, but how they use that knowledge when managing a real budget, a limited market, and campaigns from which a business expects genuine customers.
After years of hands-on work with Google Ads, I did not take the certification to replace experience with an official document. I did it to compare that accumulated experience with the platform’s current logic: how Google approaches Search campaigns, automated bidding, broad match, measurement, and optimization in 2026.
My conclusion is simple: the official principles are an important foundation. But applying them correctly depends on context — the market, budget, data quality, website, and actual business objective.
The Most Important Points at a Glance
- Google Ads Search Certification confirms knowledge of the platform’s current principles and tools, but it does not by itself prove real client results.
- Broad match and Smart Bidding can be a powerful combination when conversion tracking is accurate and the algorithm receives high-quality signals.
- In a small market, with a limited budget or little reliable data, automation should be introduced in a controlled way, not out of habit.
- The most important indicators are not optimization score, clicks, or CTR in isolation, but qualified inquiries, CPA, and the final business result.
- Good practice combines Google’s official guidance with analysis of real search queries, client feedback, and constant verification of what is actually being recorded as a conversion.
Why Did I Take the Certification After Years of Working with Google Ads?
Google Ads changes constantly. Campaign types, matching methods, automated strategies, and the role of artificial intelligence today are not what they were several years ago. Experience should therefore not become an excuse for working by outdated rules.
For me, the certification was a way to check three things:
- Whether I know the platform’s current terminology and official recommendations.
- Whether I understand the logic behind automated bidding and expanding search reach.
- Where real campaign results confirm that logic and where they require more careful application.
This distinction matters. A specialist may have extensive experience but fail to keep up with platform changes. Another may know the training material perfectly but have never been responsible for a real advertising budget. Strong expertise comes from combining the two.
What Does Google Ads Search Certification Actually Test?
Google’s official learning path for Search campaigns covers the fundamentals of creating, customizing, measuring, and optimizing search advertising. It includes topics such as user intent, keywords, bidding strategies, ad messaging, and achieving marketing objectives.
This is a useful and necessary foundation. The certification shows that a person understands how Google expects the platform to be used and can work with its main tools and concepts.
The test, however, cannot assess everything that happens after a real campaign launches:
- whether phone calls come from potential customers or from people looking for a different service;
- whether a form generates qualified B2B inquiries or random contacts with no budget;
- whether the website explains the offer clearly enough;
- whether the business responds to new inquiries promptly;
- whether a low cost per conversion leads to sales;
- whether an automatically suggested budget increase makes economic sense.
The certification evaluates knowledge of Google Ads. Practice evaluates the ability to turn that knowledge into a working solution for a specific business.
The certificate confirms that you know the system. Real results show whether you can apply it correctly.
What Does the Certificate Prove — and What Can It Not Prove on Its Own?
For me, Google Ads Search Certification is a verifiable sign of current knowledge. It has value because it does not rely solely on a claim such as “I understand Google Ads.” The certification name, issue date, and validity period can be checked in Iliya Avramov’s public credential.
But the certificate does not automatically prove:
- how many campaigns the specialist has managed;
- whether they can work with different business models;
- whether they configure conversion tracking correctly;
- whether they distinguish a technical conversion from a qualified inquiry;
- whether they protect the client’s budget;
- whether they can show verifiable results from real projects.
A certificate should therefore be considered alongside other signals: public case studies, a clear process, client access to the advertising account, transparent reporting, and the ability to explain why a particular decision is being made.
AdwayCreative also has a public Google Partner profile. This is a company-level signal, distinct from personal certification. Google describes Partner status through requirements related to performance, advertising spend, and certified specialists. None of these signals, however, removes the need for a client to examine the actual approach and results.
Broad Match and Smart Bidding: a Powerful Combination, but Not a Universal Switch
In its official documentation, Google states that broad match works particularly well with Smart Bidding. The logic is understandable: broad match provides access to more relevant searches, while the automated strategy sets the bid for each individual auction according to the likelihood of a conversion.
This combination can be highly effective. We use automation when it has sufficiently good signals and a genuine opportunity to achieve the objective more efficiently than continually managing every bid by hand.
The key question is: what exactly is the data telling the algorithm?
If simply opening a chat is recorded as a conversion, Smart Bidding may begin looking for people who open chats — not necessarily people who send a message. If invalid forms, duplicate actions, or calls with no business value are counted, automation will optimize toward the wrong signal.
Smart Bidding cannot decide on its own what constitutes a qualified customer for a particular business. That must first be defined and measured correctly.
When Do Broad Match and Smart Bidding Have a Solid Foundation?
- Conversion tracking records real, valuable actions.
- The campaign has a clear objective and does not mix incompatible conversions.
- The website and landing page match the intent behind the search.
- There is sufficient budget and time to collect data.
- Search terms are monitored and irrelevant queries are excluded.
- The target CPA or ROAS is realistic for the market and business model.
- Feedback on inquiry quality is fed back into the optimization process.
When Is More Control Needed?
In a small local market, a narrow B2B niche, with a limited budget or few reliable conversions, expanding too quickly can spend a significant part of the budget before it becomes clear which queries have value.
In these cases, we may start with a more controlled structure, carefully selected phrase- and exact-match keywords, and a separate broad-match test. We monitor not only the number of conversions, but the actual search terms and contact quality. When the data confirms that expansion works, we increase the role of automation.
This does not mean that broad match is “bad.” It means that match type and bidding strategy should follow the account’s maturity, the volume of data, and the acceptable level of risk.
Google’s Recommendations Are the Start of an Analysis, Not an Automatic Command
Google Ads displays an optimization score and specific recommendations for account changes. Some can be very useful: they may uncover missing tracking, limited reach, a problem with ad assets, or an opportunity to use a more suitable strategy.
But a recommendation does not fully understand the business’s margin, the team’s capacity, the quality of previous inquiries, or why the client set a particular budget.
Even in its official Google Partner requirements, Google notes that the agency retains control and may apply or dismiss recommendations according to its own judgment and its clients’ objectives. This is an important detail. Professional work is not the mechanical act of clicking “Apply.” It is an assessment of whether the suggestion solves a real problem.
Four Questions Before Applying an Automated Recommendation
- Which business objective will this change improve?
- What data is the recommendation based on?
- What additional budget or risk does it create?
- How will we know whether the result is better, rather than simply larger?
Why Is Conversion Quality More Important Than an Impressive Report?
Clicks, impressions, CTR, and CPC are useful diagnostic indicators. They help us understand whether the ad is being shown, whether the message attracts attention, and how much the traffic costs. But none of them alone shows whether the business is gaining customers.
The same applies to conversion data. A campaign can report many conversions if the selected conversion action is too easy to complete. That is why we first ask: what exactly lies behind the number?
In the Vasilevi Clean Google Ads case study, we configured chat to record a conversion only after a message had actually been sent, and the form only after a successful submission and the loading of a confirmation page. Over nearly four months, the campaigns generated more than 90 genuine inquiries, confirmed by the client. That matters more than a high number of chat openings or button clicks.
With CompanyRegistration.bg, the challenge was different. Some of the traffic came from people searching for government institutions, forums, or free information. Through intent analysis, negative keywords, and CRO changes, we achieved 87 B2B inquiries at an average cost per inquiry of EUR 7.66. The result did not come from pursuing maximum volume, but from better filtering.
This is also why, in our article about Google Ads metrics and business results, we distinguish between a technical conversion, a confirmed inquiry, a qualified potential customer, and the final sale.
CPA and ROAS Are Not Universal Answers
CPA shows how much one measured action costs. But if the action itself is defined incorrectly, a low CPA can also be misleading.
ROAS is a powerful metric for an online store when order value is recorded correctly, there is no duplication, and the sale happens directly on the website. For B2B services, legal matters, training providers, clinics, and local services, the sale often follows a conversation, a proposal, or a longer period. In that situation, the platform cannot see the full value without an additional connection to a CRM or offline conversion data.
That is why we do not choose a metric out of habit. We choose it according to how the business actually makes money.
How Do We Combine Google’s Official Practices with Real Data?
In our work, there is no conflict between the official methodology and practical judgment. There is a sequence:
1. We Define the Business Result
Before choosing a bidding strategy, we clarify what constitutes a valuable action: a purchase, reservation, qualified inquiry, call, or another result.
2. We Verify the Measurement
GA4, Google Tag Manager, and Google Ads must record the real action without duplication, test submissions, or signals with no business value.
3. We Adapt the Structure to the Market
We examine search volume, competition, geography, budget, and landing pages. A small local business and an international online store should not receive the same ready-made setup.
4. We Introduce Automation with a Clear Hypothesis
Broad match, Smart Bidding, Performance Max, or any other automation is not an objective in itself. We use it when it can improve a specific, measurable result.
5. We Compare the Platform with Reality
We talk to the client about contact quality. We review search terms, campaigns, devices, locations, and landing pages. If the platform reports success but the business sees no value, we look for the discrepancy.
6. We Scale After Proof
We increase the budget when the data shows that additional spend can create value and the business has the capacity to handle the result.
This is part of our broader AdwayCreative Growth Framework, in which advertising, the website, measurement, and optimization operate as a single system.
What Should You Check When Choosing a Google Ads Specialist or Agency?
A certificate is a good initial signal, but it should not be the only criterion. Ask:
- Do they have a publicly verifiable certification?
- Does the company have a valid Google Partner profile?
- Can they show case studies with a period, spend, conversion type, and CPA?
- Do they explain exactly what will be counted as a conversion?
- Will you own and have full access to the Google Ads account?
- How will inquiry quality be evaluated?
- How do they decide whether to accept or dismiss a platform recommendation?
- What will they do if the problem lies in the website or the offer, rather than the advertising?
A good Google Ads management service does not sell automation as a magic solution. It connects the search, the ad, the page, the tracking, and the actual business result.
My Conclusion After Google Ads Search Certification
The certification was useful to me because it systematized the current official principles and gave me another reference point against which to check my own practice.
I did not leave the test believing that every official recommendation should be applied in every account. I left with a clearer understanding of why Google encourages automation — and with even greater confidence that it works best when the specialist has prepared high-quality data, the right objective, and sufficiently strong business context.
Technology can analyze more signals than a person could process manually. But the person remains responsible for deciding which signals have value, what level of risk is acceptable, and whether the result in the platform matches the result for the business.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Does Google Ads Search Certification Prove?
The certification shows that its holder understands the current official principles for creating, measuring, and optimizing Search campaigns. It is an important signal of knowledge, but it does not replace real case studies, accurate measurement, and proven work with client budgets.
Is Broad Match Suitable for Every Google Ads Campaign?
Not automatically. Broad match can work very well with Smart Bidding when the campaign has accurate conversion tracking, a clear objective, high-quality data, and sufficient room to learn. In a small market or with a limited budget, it is sensible to test it in a controlled way and monitor actual search terms and inquiry quality.
Should I Apply Every Recommendation in Google Ads?
No. Every recommendation should be evaluated against the objective, budget, data, and economics of the business. Google itself states that Partner agencies may apply or dismiss recommendations according to their judgment and their clients’ objectives.
Which Metrics Matter Most in Google Ads?
It depends on the business model. For lead generation, genuine inquiries, their quality, CPA, and the percentage that become customers are usually important. In eCommerce, ROAS may be the leading metric if order values and margins are recorded correctly. CTR, CPC, and impressions are useful for diagnosis, but they do not prove a business result on their own.
What Is the Difference Between Personal Certification and Google Partner Status?
Google Ads Search Certification verifies the knowledge of a specific person. Google Partner is a company status with separate requirements related to performance, advertising spend, and certified specialists. Both signals should be considered together with public case studies and a transparent way of working.
